PCB disappointed over World Cup hosting loss Print E-mail
Saturday, 18 April 2009 10:42

ISLAMABAD (AP) -- The Pakistan Cricket Board expressed disappointed Saturday after the game's governing body removed it as co-host of the 2011 World Cup because of security fears.

'It's disappointing to lose the hosting rights of the World Cup,' PCB chief operating officer Salim Altaf was quoted as saying by the Urdu-language daily Express.

Altaf said further details of the decision would be available once PCB chairman Ijaz Butt returns from the International Cricket Council's board meeting in Dubai.

'He (Butt) will tell the reasons for this tough decision once he returns home,' Altaf said.

The ICC board said it acted due to the 'uncertain security situation' in Pakistan, which was due to co-host the event with India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

Paralympic Games open in Beijing Print E-mail
Sunday, 07 September 2008 15:28

The Paralympic Games opened in Beijing with a burst of fireworks as China welcomed another chance to cement its role as a global player to an international audience.

Thousands of cheerleaders in rainbow-coloured suits performed a dance routine in the centre of the field at the National Stadium before athletes from 148 countries were introduced.

China's Communist Party leaders and foreign dignitaries looked on as the crowd cheered and waved flags.

Guests included Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, German President Horst Koehler and South Korean Prime Minister Han Seung-soo.

Earlier on Saturday they shook hands and posed for photos with Chinese President Hu Jintao at the Great Hall of the People, the seat of China's government in the heart of Beijing.

Hu gave a brief speech and toasted the games.

'Humanitarian spirit'

"Caring for the disabled is an important symbol for social civilisation and progress," Hu said before raising his glass.

"China's people and government have always attached great importance to the cause of the disabled," he said on state television.

"We insist on putting people first, carrying forward a humanitarian spirit and advocating equality and opposing discrimination."

Opening just two weeks after the Beijing Olympics ended, the Paralympics are designed to be a parallel games for athletes with a wide range of physical disabilities. The 10-day competition begins on Sunday.

Some 4,000-plus athletes will use many of the same Olympic venues, with 148 countries represented and 472 medal events contested - 170 more than the Olympics.

National pride

Hosting the Olympics and the Paralympics is a source of national pride for China and a way to showcase the country on the international stage.

The Olympics was overshadowed at times by human rights and censorship disputes surrounding the event.

China is keen to use the Paralympics to underscore what is says it has done for the country's 83 million disabled citizens.

The official Xinhua News Agency said Beijing used much of its $100 million budget for the Paralympics to improve handicapped facilities in competition venues, airports, the public traffic system, hotels, hospitals and tourist attractions like the Great Wall and the Forbidden City.

An editorial on the front page of the ruling Communist Party's People Daily newspaper hailed the games as a "stage for the world's handicapped people to realise their dreams."

"Remarkable progress has been made in basic living standards, medicare, education and employment for the disabled," the editorial said.

"The preparation for the Beijing Paralympics...recorded fresh achievement made by China in promoting the cause for the disabled."

But the country has also had a contentious history in dealing with its disabled population.

Sterilisation

The government has long advocated sterilising mentally handicapped people.

In the early 1990s, a draft law was presented to the legislature to reduce the number of disabled through abortion and sterilization, a move that unleashed international criticism.

In 1994, China ratified a law calling for the abortion of foetuses carrying hereditary diseases and restrictions on marriages among people suffering mental problems or contagious diseases.

Beijing Olympic organisers issued an apology in June this year for clumsy stereotypes used to describe disabled athletes in an English-language manual compiled for thousands of volunteers.

One section described the physically disabled as "isolated, unsocial and introspective; they usually do not volunteer to contact people. They can be stubborn and controlling."

Federer heads in final no five Print E-mail
Sunday, 07 September 2008 15:26
Roger Federer battled past Serbian Novak Djokovic 6-3 5-7 7-5 6-2 to reach the final of the U.S. Open for the fifth successive year.

In a match that was a repeat of last year's final, the four-times champion hammered 20 aces in his best performance of the tournament to set up a final against either world number one Rafael Nadal or British sixth seed Andy Murray.

"I am so excited to be back in the final again," the second seed said in a courtside interview.

"I've worked hard all season to do well in the big ones. (To win) here at the Open would mean a hell of a lot to me."

Qatar and North Korea go top Print E-mail
Sunday, 07 September 2008 15:15
Qatar and surprise package North Korea clinched early wins to move to the top of the two Asian groups in World Cup qualifying.

Qatar got off to a flying start in Group One when they pounded Asia's in-form team Uzbekistan 3-0, while North Korea snatched the Group Two lead after beating the struggling United Arab Emirates 2-1 in Abu Dhabi.

Japan had looked set for an emphatic win over Bahrain to get their stuttering campaign in order but conceded two goals in an embarrassing three-minute meltdown for a jittery 3-2 win.

Osasuna midfielder Javad Nekounam scored a late equaliser to earn Iran a 1-1 draw with fellow World Cup regulars Saudi Arabia to take a share of second place in Group Two.

Qatar 'click'

Qatar's campaign has been under a cloud after they fielded an ineligible player in an earlier round but they showed no signs of concern in Doha, putting three goals past the Uzbeks, the top scorers in the competition.

Majdi Siddiq put them ahead on 37 minutes. Magid Hassan added another goal in the 73rd minute before Talal al-Bloushi rounded off the win with four minutes remaining.

"Everything clicked as we had planned," Qatar Uruguayan coach Jorge Fossati said.

"The goals came at the right time, the substitutions were made at the right time. I'm happy with the result."

Qatar are awaiting a ruling by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) over whether they breached competition rules by fielding naturalised Brazilian Emerson in a match in March.

North Korea put on a solid defensive display against the UAE and went ahead on 70 minutes when Basheer Saeed put the ball in his own net.

An Chol-hyok cannoned in a superb second goal for the Koreans before Saeed cancelled out his own goal with an 85th-minute deflected strike.

Japan survive Bahrain fightback

Japan, under fire after unconvincing performances in the previous round, did themselves no favours in the dying minutes of a thrilling match in Manama.

Celtic's Shunsuke Nakamura converted a free kick and Yasuhito Endo a penalty to put Japan two up at the break and Kengo Nakamura added another goal with five minutes remaining.

However, Bahrain pulled one back two minutes later through Salman Isa before Tulio headed the ball into his own goal in a dismal end to Japan's match.

Iran earn late draw in Saudi Arabia

Javad Nekounam scored an 81st-minute equalizer for Iran to draw with Saudi Arabia.

The Saudis were rewarded for an aggressive first half with striker Saad al-Harthi's goal in the 29th minute.

But Saudi Arabia failed to convert three other opportunities.

One was repelled by Iran goalkeeper Mahdi Rahmati and twice shots flew wide.

Iran finally broke Saudi control when Nekounam scored with nine minutes left with a header past goalkeeper Mansour al-Naqi.

To encourage Saudis to attend the match, the entrance fee was waived by the General Presidency for Youth Welfare, the federation that oversees sports.

Thus, King Fahd International Stadium was packed with thousands of Saudis, many of them dressed in green, the color of the national flag.

In a reflection of the uneasy ties between the two countries, Saudis booed when the Iranian national anthem was played.

Relations between overwhelmingly Sunni Muslim Saudi Arabia and non-Arab Iran, where Shiite Muslims are a majority, have been strained for years.

The top two teams in each group earn berths at the 2010 finals in South Africa, with another spot available to the fifth-placed team if they can overcome Oceania champions New Zealand in a playoff.

Akhtar allowed to play for Surrey Print E-mail
Wednesday, 03 September 2008 14:08

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan, Sept 2, (AP): Fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar’s bid to play in the English County Championship has been given the blessing of the Pakistan Cricket Board. “He (Akhtar) had requested for a No Objection Certificate, which we have issued to him, and we have no problems if he wants to play in county cricket,” PCB chief operating officer Shafqat Naghmi told the Associated Press on Tuesday. Akhtar, who has not played first class cricket since a test match against India in December, is expected to join English county Surrey, which is placed at the bottom of the Division One table with three matches to go. “Akhtar has not played competitive cricket for months and he needs to regain match fitness,” Naghmi said. “We believe a short county stint might help him in doing that.” The 33-year-old Akhtar has previously played for English counties Somerset, Worcestershire and Durham.

The fast bowler — known as “Rawalpindi Express” — had a troubled 2008 in which he managed to win selection in the Pakistan team for the Champions Trophy limited-overs tournament after a court in Lahore suspended his 18-month.
The International Cricket Council subsequently postponed the Champions Trophy for a year after four leading teams — England, Australia, South Africa and New Zealand — expressed security concerns over playing in Pakistan.
In the recent past, the PCB had strong reservations over its cricketers — especially fast bowlers — competing in county cricket. Over the last two years it has refused permission to pacemen Umar Gul and Rao Iftikhar to play in English County Championship.
“Akhtar’s case is a bit different,” Naghmi said. “He needs some matches to test his fitness.”

Performance Appraisals - Make Yours Glow

Does the prospect of receiving formal feedback from your boss, peers and subordinates in the form of a professional performance appraisal have your petrified to the core? Here are some tips from bayt.com on how to make the most of your performance appraisal and turn it to your advantage.

It's that dreaded time of year again. The rumour mill has it that those much-maligned annual performance reviews are already in the process of being churned by the HR departments and that this year they are even more rigorous and detailed than last year. The sudden silence from the HR quarters would seem to confirm this. Word even has it that last year's grades were considered "inflated" across the board and that this year managers were being coaxed to take a more subdued approach and "rein in" their accolades!
