It is the season of weddings. And that means there are lots and lots of parties and ceremonial events coming up. With fashions changing at the drop of a hat, it becomes difficult, not to mention expensive, to keep up with trends. Whether you are attending your sister’s wedding or a colleague’s nuptials, a foolproof method to make your way through the party season is to stick with the classics.

Saris, lehngas, and long flowing kurtas with churidaar pajamas never look dated and can be worn over and over again. Corset-inspired halter tops are hot right now, paired with fitted lehngas. Creating a long, graceful silhouette, they are the perfect choice for those looking to make a dazzling entrance.

When it comes to formal wear, chiffon and silk dominate as the fabrics of choice for their light, luxe feel.

Embellished with traditional embroideries like dabka, zardozi and resham, and accentuated by sequins, crystals, beads and faux pearls, there is enough sparkle in these ensembles to offset the need for any other bling. However, if you are so inclined, then do add on select pieces of elegant jewellery and an armful of glass bangles to finish off your look. Don’t forget the mehndi – it is the quintessential accessory to a desi wedding!

For men, the situation is slightly simpler. A dark suit or a well-tailored shalwar kameez can do the duty just as well but if you are in the mood to make a stand-out impression, then a classic sherwani in a rich fabric with a touch of threadwork can cut a sharp image. Choose neutrals such as black, navy, beige, cream or off-white if you are a conservative dresser or splash out on gorgeous gem shades in ruby or emerald. Pair with straight pants and you are good to go!
